Description

Help get the trash out of the splash on Saturday September 21st starting at 8AM.  Take part in the state’s largest annual volunteer event as you clean your neighborhoods, local parks, streets, and storm drains too. Trash travels through storm drains, streams, and rivers to become bay and Gulf pollution. Picking up litter benefits you, your community and the Gulf.

Graduate students from the Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences will be leading the Dauphin Island site at Green Park, 302 Lemoyne Dr, Dauphin Island, AL 36528.  Participants are welcome to stop by the Green Park "headquarters" on September 21, 2024, anytime between 8 AM and 12 PM to check in and receive supplies, including a free t-shirt, trash bags, and gloves, while supplies last. Participants may choose the cleanup site of their preference (e.g. beach, sound side, etc.).  Note that leashed and well behaved (plays well with others)/friendly dogs are permitted on all DI beached except for the West End Beach.  Pets are prohibited on the West End Beach due to the presence of critical bird nesting habitats.

Let’s work together to make the 37th cleanup a stellar event! We want you to be safe!  Please use extra caution when cleaning and don’t do anything you feel may jeopardize your health and safety. Take note of large objects and report the location instead of tackling it yourself.  In the event of inclement weather, seek shelter.  Leave the beach immediately if you hear thunder and/or see lightning.  Dress for the weather.  Wear comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, light colored clothing, bring a water bottle with water, snacks, and anything else that you need to feel comfortable.

Go paperless and record your trash collection on the CleanSwell App. It’s easy, and it’s free.

Sea you there! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

South Students/MSSA members, and/or Dr. Sprinkle's MAS 134/L, MAS 331/L, CAS 100 etc. students:  meet the Marine Sciences Student Association at the parking lot of the West End Public Beach on Dauphin Island the morning of Saturday, September 21st between 8am and 9am.  Turn right at the DI Water Tower and the West End Public Beach parking lot is the furthest point that you can drive on the West End of the island.  Sign in with MSSA between 8am and 9am to pick up supplies (free shirt, trash bag, gloves, etc.); MSSA will have a table set up and we will be waiting for you.  You may bring friends and family, but they must sign a travel waiver (to be provided closer to the event date) and they must complete this google form by 5pm on Tuesday 9/17 to receive a shirt.  Excited?!?  Get ready for a fun morning on the beach "treasure" hunting (trash? shark's tooth? you never know what you'll find!).

Wear shoes that you are comfortable walking a distance in, in the sand.  Dress for the weather (e.g. hat, sunscreen, light colored clothing, bathing suit, etc.).  Bring sunscreen, a hat, rain jacket, beach towel, water bottle with water, snacks, and money $ for whatever you might want to do after Coastal Cleanup (e.g. lunch, shopping, etc.).   In case of inclement weather, if you hear thunder or see lightning, leave the beach immediately and seek shelter.

Safety is our top priority. The West End Beach stretches over 9 miles in length, so please be mindful of your comfort level and walk only as far as you’re confident you can return to the MSSA tent by noon at the latest. All participants must check and check out with MSSA.  Parking at the West End Beach will be FREE the morning of the event (8am - 12pm) for all participants.  Note that leashed and well behaved (plays well with others)/friendly dogs are permitted on all DI beached except for the West End Beach.  Pets are prohibited on the West End Beach due to the presence of critical bird nesting habitats.
