What: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service - Energizing Eslava
When: Saturday, January 18, from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. (check in and guest speaker at 8:30 a.m., cleanup from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.)
Where: Eslava Creek with check-in at Springdale Mall (3250 Airport Blvd.) in the parking lot on the east side of the mall off of Airport Blvd. The cleanup will take place at various sites around the mall and each site will have a site captain.
What: Presented by Mobile United, Mobile Baykeeper, Dog River Clearwater Revival, Alabama Coastal Foundation, and Mobile Bay National Estuary Program, the Office of Community Engagement, and others, the MLK 2020 Day of Service brings together members of the community to make a change in our environment. This event is open to the public and everyone is encouraged to serve the community on this memorable day.
The MLK Day of Service is a community cleanup at Eslava Creek. We will gather litter and debris from our waterways and surrounding areas to provide a cleaner community for all. Bring about change and provide our area with clean air, clean water and healthy communities.
This event is outdoors and volunteers should expect cold weather and wet/muddy ground, and should dress accordingly (closed-toe shoes are a must; shoes that can get wet or muddy like waders, boots, etc. are encouraged). All cleaning supplies (pickers, gloves, vests, and garbage bags) will be provided at the event. Water coolers for refillable water bottles, bug spray, and sunscreen will also be available at the event.
Light blue t-shirts will be given out on a first-come/first-served basis to those who participate in the week. Please use this link to let us know your preferred shirt size after you RESPOND to the Need.
IMPORTANT: All participants are required to sign a waiver. To sign the waiver electronically, click on the dropdown menu at the TOP RIGHT by your Initials or Picture. Then, click on QUALIFICATIONS and look for the “MLK 2020 Day of Service Waiver” listed under "Incomplete Waivers". Waiver forms will also be available at all events. Anyone under 18 will need a parent/guardian to sign the waiver, which can also be downloaded when you RESPOND, and returned to the Office of Community Engagement in the Student Center (Room 240) or brought to the event.
