Side walkers are focused on the rider and what he/she is doing. They must stay within reach of the rider and be aware of everything that’s going on with the rider while assisting the rider in completing tasks directed by instructors.
Qualifications
- Comfortable around horses and people (no experience necessary)
- Able to reinforce instructor’s directions when requested
- Vigilant-constantly alert to the possible need for instant help
- Have completed a volunteer orientation and training session
- Must be able to hold their arm at or above shoulder height for 30 mins to an hour
- Can support the weight of a student
Responsibilities
- Greet the rider when he/she arrives and assists in finding a helmet
- Check in with the staff and Volunteer team to see what needs to be done
- Assist with mounting and dismounting
- Walk or jog beside the rider providing support as instructed, possibly assisting with position changes and/or supporting a rider
- Reinforce the instructor’s directions only when asked. Our riders may need extra time to respond and excessive talking can easily distract them
