Please fill out the volunteer form, Bellingrath Waiver, and BSA waiver attached to this event/need and email or bring to Dr. Strickland. It is probably easiest to fill out most boxes electronically and then print to sign. If you need a printout, come to Dr. Strickland's office (ELSB 222).
On November 9th, you can arrive at Bellingrath by 9:30am or meet by 8:45am at the Earth and Life Science Building to carpool. If you need a ride and/or want to carpool, please email Dr. Strickland at jasonstrickland@southalabama.edu so he can coordinate that.
There will be donuts available for breakfast and then drinks/snacks available during work time. Volunteers get a discount of 15% in the Bellingrath cafeteria if they want to eat there for lunch.
Bellingrath will provide gloves and tools, but make sure you bring/wear weather-appropriate clothing. We suggest pants, sturdy shoes, and a hat to block the sun.
We believe this is a volunteer opportunity that USA students and faculty will find both enjoyable and extremely rewarding. The legendary Bellingrath Gardens’ Camellia Arboretum, created in 1958 as a tribute to Walter Bellingrath’s love of the camellia, was tragically destroyed in 1979 by hurricane Frederick. This incredible memorial which was designed “to display every known camelia in cultivation” has remained abandoned all of these many years. Miraculously, a few of the original plantings have survived and we believe strongly that now is the time to act and recapture the natural grandeur of the garden. The task is great; however, the reward is even greater.
