Who We Are

South Alabama Land Trust protects land and promotes environmental education in coastal Alabama so current and future residents can enjoy clean water and the marine life, wildlife, and outdoor recreation that define our area. Under its former name, South Alabama Land Trust was incorporated in 1990 as a non-profit organization to support the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in its efforts to conserve the pristine coastal area of Baldwin County, Alabama. In 2009, we became a Nationally Accredited Land Trust. With the support of more than 550 members, generous donors, and event sponsors, we have protected more than 11,000 acres of coastline in Baldwin and Mobile counties. This is done through a combination of conservation easements, land donations, and purchases.

What We Do

Land Conservation: Since 1990, South Alabama Land Trust (SALT) has protected nearly 12,500 acres of forests, wetlands, shorelines, and other ecologically significant habitats in Alabama's two coastal counties. As a nationally accredited land trust, SALT inspects each conservation property annually to ensure long-term protection of plant and animal habitats. SALT also implements projects to improve habitat health (e.g., prescribed burns, invasive species eradication, boundary enforcement). Environmental education & community engagement: SALT's annual Gulf Coast Nature Expo invites children and families to learn about nature and the outdoors through interactive activities, wildlife encounters, and demonstrations, sparking curiosity and environmental stewardship at a young age. SALT hosts regular expert-guided tours of land that we have protected, workshops, and lectures that connect people with the region’s unique plants and animal life.
