Navigators are advocates for homeless clients who participate in Project Homeless Connect. Throughout the Project Homeless Connect day, several hundred people who are identified as "Homeless" will come to receive services such as: Health & Wellness, Legal, State IDs, Education, Barber/Beauty, Employment, Clothing, Distribution of Necessities, and Housing and Veteran Services. Navigators act as "tour guides" and "advocates" through the many service areas.
This role is really important and can be very rewarding as you develop a partnership with your client. Navigators can make (or sadly, break) the event for an individual due to the treatment, care, and efficiency afforded by the relationship that is formed. It is important to treat all clients with dignity and respect.
Dr. Mitchell, VP of Student Affairs and Dean of Students, will EXCUSE Absences on Friday 1/31, due to volunteering for this Need. Make sure you ask for the excused absence letter when you sign out of the event. Letters will be coordinated by the Office of Community Engagement.
To volunteer you must complete the following:
- Respond to this Need by clicking on the RESPOND button in the top right corner of the screen. All activity participants are required to sign a waiver and review a training packet, which will be available electronically when you RESPOND to this Need. After you've electronically signed the waiver and confirmed completion of the training packet, click the RESPOND button for the shift of your choice for this Need to complete your registration. (NOTE: In Alabama, if you are under 19, a parent must sign the waiver and release forms.)
- The Training Packet will give you an overview of the project, and also help you understand the things you might encounter so that you feel more comfortable in your role. HIPAA training is required prior to the event due to the laws surrounding privacy and healthcare.
- Bring your Student ID/License with you to the event, and wear a red shirt of your choice to be distinguished from other volunteers.
- Agree that you will not use your cellular phone during the event. It is preferred that you leave your phone in your vehicle.
