Navigator: 2019 Project Homeless Connect

Expired

Description

Navigators are advocates for homeless clients who participate in Project Homeless Connect.  Throughout the day, several hundred people who are identified as "Homeless" will come to receive services such as: Health & Wellness, Legal, State IDs, Education, Barber/Beauty, Employment, Clothing, Distribution of necessities, and Housing and Veteran Services.  Navigators act as "tour guides" and "advocates" through the many service areas.

This is such an important role and can be very rewarding as you develop a partnership with your client.  Navigators can make (or sadly, break) the event for an individual due to the treatment, care and efficiency afforded by the relationship that is formed.  It is important to treat all clients with dignity and respect.

Dr Mitchell, VP of Student Affairs and Dean of Students, will EXCUSE Absences on Friday 1/25, due to Volunteering for this Need.   Make sure you ask for the letter when you sign out of the Event. Letters will be coordinated by the Office of Community Engagement.

To volunteer you must complete the following:

1) Respond to this Need and Select your Shift preference (between 7am to 12; 7:30am to 12:30; 10am to 3).

2) Review the Training Packet.  (HIPAA training is required prior to the event due to the laws surrounding privacy and healthcare.  The training will also help you understand the things you might encounter so that you feel more comfortable in your role.)

3) Complete the Waiver and Liability Release forms and bring them with you on the day of the event. (NOTE: In Alabama, if you are under 19, a parent must sign the waiver and release forms.)

4) Bring your Student ID/License with you to the event, and wear a red shirt of your choice to be distinguished as a volunteer.

5) Agree that you will not use your cellular phone during the event.  It is preferred that you leave your phone in your vehicle.
