As part of the 2021 MLK Jr Week of Unity & Service, the University of South Alabama is hosting a Food and Hygiene Drive for the Homeless and we invite you to contribute, and to encourage others to as well.
The items collected from now until Friday, January 22, will be distributed through Housing First's Community Outreach Program, to community members experiencing homelessness in Mobile and Baldwin counties.
ITEMS REQUESTED
- Men’s cotton socks
- Face masks (manufactured or hand-made)
- Body wipes and basic hygiene items
- Feminine hygiene products
- Small bottles of hand sanitizer
- Travel-size First-Aid kits
- First-aid cream (i.e., Neosporin)
- Canned ready-to-eat foods (i.e. Ravioli, stews, etc.) that can be eaten cold
- Pop-top cans (i.e. Vienna sausages, potted meat, Beanie Weenies, etc.)
- Fruit cups or pop-top canned fruits
- Non-perishable snacks (i.e., packs of cheese/peanut butter crackers, etc.)
- Basic can openers
- Flashlights with spare batteries
HOW TO DONATE
- Donations can be purchased and shipped to the USA Office of Community Engagement using an Amazon Wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/registries/custom/3PT50GOSX82N6/guest-view.
- Anyone wanting to use the Amazon Wishlist should make sure to place their orders by Tuesday, January 19.
- When selecting the Shipping Address, choose "Shannon Shelley-Tremblay Gift Registry Address".
- In the event you receive an e-mail from Amazon that your shipment was not received or returned, please send the order number found in the e-mail or your purchase history to communityengagement@southalabama.edu so we can follow up with Amazon.
- Donations can also be dropped off in collection boxes at the following locations between Wednesday, January 13, and Friday, January 22, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.:
- Academic Services Center, Suite 1304
- Children's & Women's Hospital lobby
- Marx Library, at the circulation desk near the Starbucks
- Medical Sciences Building, hallway outside Suite 2050
- Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, Student Center, Suite 120

SERVICE HOURS
While service hours are not available for donated items, you can earn 30 minutes of service credit for recruiting someone else to participate in this drive as well.
To receive credit for recruiting other participants, you'll need to:
- Respond to this Need.
- When tracking your service hours in South Serves, include the name and e-mail of the person you recruited in the hours description.
- Have the person you recruited also respond to this need and either send a screencap of their order or a selfie with their donation to communityengagement@southalabama.edu.

Branded t-shirts and face masks will be given out on a first-come/first-serve basis to campus community members who participate in the University's MLK Jr. 2021 Week of Unity & Service. Please use this link to let us know your preferred shirt size: https://forms.gle/bT23iwhYqDxJvH1eA.
T-shirts and masks will be available for on-campus pick-up the weeks of January 18 and 25. Feel free to stop by the Office of Community Engagement in the Student Center (Ste. 240) to get your shirt and mask. This office location will be open during the following:

- Wed., Jan, 20, between 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.
