What is GEMS?  GEMS is a fun and exciting way for girls in grades 6-8 to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Students pick their favorite subjects and then get their hands dirty in workshops designed to showcase how much fun it is to work in associated fields. Workshops are conducted by professors and local professionals and include making jewelry with DNA, conducting forensic investigations, hunting for gems and minerals, designing web pages…and many more!

When?  Saturday, November 2nd.  The half-day workshop begins at 8:30 am and concludes at 1:30 pm.  Girls will leave with a goodie bag, a t-shirt, new friends, and big dreams for their futures!

Where?  Students will visit a variety of locations on the University of South Alabama campus.

GEMS needs volunteers in the following areas: 

  1. Stuff GEMS conference bags and post signs around buildings (the day before GEMS) Friday, November 1st, 3:00-5:30 PM, MSPB – Math & Physics building  (6 volunteers needed)
  1. Setup the sign in area in the Student Center, post signs around campus. Assist with Registration/Sign-In. Greet and guide students and parents during registration. Saturday, November 2nd, 7:00- 9:00 am (10 volunteers needed)
  2. Monitor and interact with students to keep them excited prior to the opening ceremony. Assist with the opening ceremony. Saturday, November 2nd,  8:00- 9:30 am (4 volunteers needed)
  3. Escort and monitor students between workshops. Saturday, November 2nd, 9:00- 1:00 pm ( 20 volunteers needed)
  4. Lunch setup, monitoring, and cleanup. Saturday, November 2nd, 12:30- 2:00 pm (8 volunteers needed)
  5. Runner for last-minute tasks. Saturday, November 2nd, 9:00- 11:00 am (3 volunteers needed)
  6. Runner for last-minute tasks. Saturday, November 2nd, 11:00- 1:00 pm (3 volunteers needed)
  7. Help in SLB (Science Laboratory Building). Monitor Students. Help post signs, help with workshop set up and clean up. Saturday, November 2nd, 8:45 AM -1:00 PM (2 volunteers needed)
  8. Help in LSCB (Life Science Building). Monitor Students. Help post signs, help with workshop set up and clean up. Saturday, November 2nd,     8:45 am -1:00 pm (2 volunteers needed)
  9. Event Photographer. Saturday, November 2nd, 8:30 am- 1:30 pm(2 volunteers needed)
