The 36th Annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, September 16th, 8am to noon. Individuals, clubs, organizations, and more are encouraged to volunteer for a few hours to "help get the trash out of the splash". Green Park, located next to Ship & Shore, will serve as the host site for Dauphin Island cleanup registration site, supply distribution, and dumpster location. Volunteers should check in at Dauphin Island's Green Park. You will be provided with cleanup supplies, and a rad Coastal Cleanup t-shirt (while supplies last). Questions and/or concerns? Contact the Dauphin Island Team Captain Christa Russell at crussell@disl.org
*Students enrolled in Dr. Sprinkle's MAS 134/L, ENV 337/L, and/or CAS 100 should plan to meet Dr. Sprinkle at their assigned rally point, not Green Park (see the course Canvas site and emails for instructions and details).
**All volunteers must sign a Coastal Cleanup Waiver and a U of South Alabama Travel Waiver. Hard copies of the waivers can be picked up, and turned in to, the third floor front desk of the Education and Outreach Building (EOB). Questions about waivers should be directed to Dr. Sprinkle at sprinkle@southalabama.edu
Coastal Cleanup is the state’s largest annual volunteer event as you clean your neighborhoods, local parks, streets, and storm drains too. Trash travels through storm drains, streams, and rivers to become bay and Gulf pollution. Picking up litter benefits you, your community and the Gulf.
Over 108,000 volunteers have assisted in this event since Alabama joined the International Coastal Cleanup in 1987. We are grateful to the many helping hands and hearts who have pitched in to benefit our priceless natural resources.
Thank you for your assistance. Volunteers like you use their time and talents to make the world a better place.
- Bring a water bottle and water.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Wear plenty of sunscreen.
- Do not attempt to lift heavy objects. Mark the location and contact the zone Captain for Help.
- An adult should supervise children at all times.
- Be careful near sand dunes and other fragile ecosystems.
- Keep an eye on the sky. If it "roars" stay indoors. In the event of thunder and/or lightning, seek shelter.
