MaPP Challenge Redux: To Aleph-Zero, And Beyond!
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is proud to re-run this science fiction-themed MaPP Challenge puzzlehunt last played on campus in 2019. Players will use their own smart devices along with our GPS-enabled app to find puzzles hidden at locations around campus. Solving puzzles will lead to new puzzles, each featuring a cast of strange characters vaguely familiar to (yet legally distinct from!) characters from your favorite sci-fi stories. This is not a competition between teams, but a fun race against the clock to solve all the puzzles before the end of the day!
This event is for teams of 9th-12th grade students and assumes no prior experience with mathematical puzzles (advanced 7th or 8th grade students may enjoy the event as well).
Freeplay Puzzle Rooms
Several fun puzzle activities designed by the Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival will available to be enjoyed throughout the event.
Presentations for General Audiences
Several of South's faculty will present on the math and logic puzzles that show up in our research, topics that can be appreciated by general audiences of high school students and older!
Food and Snacks
Each ticket includes access to our snack table and a pizza lunch.
Volunteers Needed
South students interested in participating in this event are encouraged to volunteer with us on the day of the event - service hours are available!
