Who We Are

USA Health University Hospital is a 406-bed acute care facility that serves as the primary teaching hospital for the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. It is the major referral center for southern Alabama, southern Mississippi, and portions of northwest Florida, offering centers for Level I trauma, burns, cardiovascular disease, strokes, and sickle cell disease. Its sophisticated technology combined with the desire, dedication, and determination of an acclaimed professional staff allows patients to receive the finest medical care available. What We Do

Office of Volunteer Services

At USA Health University Hospital, volunteers help to comfort and tend to patients of all ages. We seek out passionate, motivated and committed individuals of all ages and backgrounds to work in our service departments. Our volunteers contribute to University Hospital by assisting on patient floors, “driving” the Jolly Trolley cart, transporting patients and much more. University Hospital offers volunteers the opportunity to make an impact in their community, gain meaningful connections, learn new skills and explore careers in healthcare.

We accept applications year-round. However, placement in service areas are subject to space and need.

General Requirements

  • Documentation of the Following:
    • 2 doses of MMR (Mumps-Measles-Rubella)
    • 3 doses of Hepatitis B vaccination
    • 2 doses OR documented history of Varicella (Chicken Pox) vaccine
    • Flu Shot: 1 dose for the semester
    • 1 dose of TDAP (Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis) within the last 10 years
    • TB Skin Test under one of the following conditions:
      • Applicants must provide written documentation of a negative test within the previous 12 months and complete the symptom evaluation and TB risk assessment forms.
      • Applicants without documentation of a negative test result during the preceding 12 months, will need to provide documentation of a 2-step skin test: initial TST (read at 48-72 hours), if negative; a second TST (read at 48-72 hours) to confirm the first reading given 1-3 weeks from the first test.
      • Applicants with history of positive TB screening must provide documentation of a clear chest x-ray.
  • Commitment of 3 to 4 hours a week (same day/same time) for 6 months
  • Purchase of a volunteer uniform shirt
