Please check out our Facebook page and share with anyone who might be interested:   https://www.facebook.com/Donor-to-Diner-at-USA-801151586691968/   Many students use our pantry, but based on SGA's survey, there are many more students experiencing food insecurity that we are not yet reaching.  We send flyers and emails through various departments and campus organizations to help us spread the word.

You can also complete this google form to be added to our email list: https://goo.gl/forms/NiXyebbu1NnEvLE42.  Let me know your preferred date and time, and feel free to contact me if you have any other questions or concerns. Have a great day!

Volunteer: Volunteer "teachers" for a variety of class subjects

**Please call 471-1998 or email jamie@mulherinhome.com for more information. You MUST schedule an appointment for a tour before volunteer hours can begin. Volunteer Connect and South Serves messages are not regularly checked and sometimes filter into my spam folder. Please email me to set up a time to volunteer.**

Are you a future teacher, college student or high school student who has a love for History, Astronomy, Zoology, Foreign Languages, Art, Drama, etc.? Do you love to share your knowledge or interests with others perhaps in a small classroom type setting? We have several residents at Mulherin Home who LOVE to learn! We are looking for volunteers to teach classes on various subjects. These are adults with special needs so there is no grading, just learning! Get volunteer hours while talking about your favorite subjects! Classes can be anywhere from 30 mins to over an hour, and can repeat or be a one time "workshop."

You do not have to be a student to volunteer, and you do not have to be a professional in whatever subject you want to teach. You will have access to a large screen TV if you need to cast photos or videos. Most of them can not read, but they remember and love showing off what they have learned!

We accept volunteers seven days a week 9am to 5:30pm.

We have approximately 10-15 residents who are ready for classes to start!

This is an excellent way to earn a letter of recommendation for college admission or for a job!

Volunteer: Special Olympics

ECI/The Arc of Southwest Alabama is in search of volunteers for our Special Olympics program. Our agency participates in the Washington County and the state Special Olympics programs each year. Our athletes compete in Track & Field, Bocce, Golf and Powerlifting.

We are in great need of volunteers to assist us to attend these events, especially the trip to the State Games in Troy, Alabama. This is usually the weekend after Mother's Day in May. There is a process to becoming a volunteer (background check, on-line training) so we would need to start this process as quickly as possible. There is also an opportunity closer to home, the local Special Olympics games are usually in the spring, on a Friday in April in Tibbie, Alabama.

If you are interested, please contact Christy Sullivan at ECI/The Arc of Southwest Alabama at 251-847-2970, x.0.

Thank you!

Volunteer: USA Health Hospitals

Volunteers at our facilities find rewarding opportunities that directly affect the healing process for our patients and often can relieve stress for their families. Volunteer openings are available at Children’s & Women’s Hospital,  and University Hospital

Volunteer commitment is a once a week 4 hour shift same day/time every week for 6 months. You pick your day/time to work around your schedule.  The application details the health requirements and application deadline date for each session. The link below will take you to the website. Click sign up and it will take you to the online application

https://www.usahealthsystem.com/volunteering/volunteering-at-childrens-womens-hospital

Once the applicant completes the application they are invited to attend an orientation. At orientation we discuss the volunteer service areas and the available time slots for each area at both hospitals ( Children’s & Women’s Hospital, University Hospital).

The volunteer selects their preferred service area of choice and day/time of the week they are available. We then place the volunteers in their desired area unless the requested day/time isn’t available. Basically, we try and put the volunteer in the area they have requested unless the day/time they need is already filled.

Questions? Email Rebekah Blanchard at rwblanchard@health.southalabama.edu or Ashley Peyer apeyer@health.southalabama.edu

Volunteer: Volunteer Online as an English Conversation Partner

Ready to change a life from the comfort of home?

Join ENGin as a conversation partner and be matched with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one-on-one English conversations. In just one hour a week, you can help someone build confidence, break the language barrier, and feel supported, all while discovering a new culture and making a genuine human connection.

We’ll pair you up with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one hour videochats at times that are convenient for you. During your conversations, you’ll facilitate English practice for your partner, learn about each other’s cultures, and offer an empathetic, authentic space for connection.

Our only requirements for volunteers are English fluency, a strong internet connection, and the ability to commit to one hour a week for a minimum of 12 weeks.

No prior tutoring experience or knowledge of Ukrainian language is needed to volunteer with ENGin. We offer ample training resources, session materials, and total flexibility to customize your sessions to fit your/your partner’s goals and preferences. Our friendly team is available to support you throughout your time with us.

Since our launch in 2020, ENGin has matched over 32,000 volunteers with Ukrainians for authentic English-language connection across borders, and we continue to grow every day. 99% of our learners report feeling they were able to break the language barrier as a participant in our program, and 79% of our participants form lasting friendships. We're incredibly proud of these results, and we can't wait to welcome you into this global community of volunteers making them possible.

Here's what three ENGin volunteers say about their experience.

"I made a friend in Ukraine and we are teaching each other about our culture, our language, and our humor. We're even trading dad jokes! Both of us look forward to our chats and have a hard time wrapping it up."

“Fantastic organization doing great work. So happy to be a small part of it.  My partner and I have worked together for two years and have become good friends! Her English has become better, and I have become more knowledgeable about Ukraine!”

"This program has been, I think, life-changing for both of us. I really consider her more like my daughter right now. That's how close we have become!"
