Needs From: South Serves

Each year, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society hosts a cycling fundraiser called Bike MS: Tour de Beach.  This event raises over $500,000 for programs, services, and research benefitting thousands of people in your region living with multiple sclerosis. Free event t-shirt, refreshments, and community service hours available.        

This year's event is scheduled for Friday September 16th,  Saturday September 17th and Sunday September 18th. We are in need of Volunteer Photographers to help capture the spirit, atmosphere and magic of this event. We have opportunities at the Start/Finish line, located at Gulf State Park.

Feel free to browse the opportunities. And either sign up. Or contact me, so we can discuss the best way to volunteer, and ensure you have a fun and rewarding experience. Prior to the event, you will receive all the information and training you need.

The Museum is looking for volunteers to dedicate 1 to 2 hours per month pulling up weeds in the Robert Thrower Medicinal Garden. The garden consists of three small beds bordering the front of the house. Hours can be flexible.

By becoming a Rape Crisis Volunteer, you can help by assisting victims of sexual assault within our community. Volunteers are trained to accompany victims at the hospital immediately following the assault, answer crisis calls, assist and participate in community events and fundraising opportunities.

All potential volunteers are asked to attend a screening interview, which includes a background check. It is required and appreciated that each volunteer agrees to no less than one year of committed service. With your support, we can and will continue to provide these critical services on a 24/7 basis.

We urgently need volunteers to help get our Habitat houses built! Volunteers are so important to us because they are the ones who build our houses, under the supervision of our construction crew. We are able to keep building costs down and provide our families affordable housing, through the efforts of our volunteers! We build (Tuesday-Saturday, 8A-3P). We have a few builds coming up that need your help, and we welcome individual volunteers as well as groups. Duties range from painting to flooring and sometimes even putting up walls! No previous skills are needed. Come help build a Habitat Home today!

The Office of Community Engagement promotes partnerships between the University of South Alabama community and the Mobile community, and we use South Serves to help make these connections.  We encourage you to look at the Needs and Events on South Serves to see what type of volunteer opportunities, partnerships, and experiences are available in the area.  Check out the types of Needs that connect to your different interests, and the large list of Agencies.  Some needs originate on our South Serves site, while others come to us from United Way's Volunteer Connect agencies. 

If you're interested in receiving training on how to use the South Serves system, feel free to click the blue RESPOND button at the top or bottom of this screen, complete the form that appears, and then click the blue SUBMIT NEED RESPONSE at the bottom of the page.  Someone in the Office of Community Engagement will reach out to you to schedule an orientation session.

If you're viewing this Need while in a South Serves training session, practice the process of becoming a committed neighbor by going ahead and responding to this Need -- click the blue RESPOND button at the top or bottom of this screen, complete the form that appears, and then click the blue SUBMIT NEED RESPONSE at the bottom of the page.  (You'll see that the box changes to "unregister" in case you find out later that you can no longer serve.)

Now you can select TRACK HOURS using the top right-side navigation (Using PC - see dropdown to the right of your initials; or using ipad/phone - the little white box with black slides).  You'll click "+ADD HOURS", and at Select A Need dropdown, you'll see this Need.  Complete the form to add .5 hour of service (one half hour/30 minutes is listed as .5).

Next, review your Volunteer Resume by using left-side navigation and selecting the Dashboard/Home.  You will see a link that says: View your full Volunteer Resume under the Hours By Interest graph.
