At First Light Community of Mobile, we have six houses for our core members to live in. Because we put so much time into taking care of our core members and providing them the best life possible, we don't always have time to take care of the exterior of our houses. We are looking for volunteers to help with gardening and landscaping at our different properties to help maintain the integrity of our homes. 

Conversations to Remember is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to combating loneliness and isolation felt by senior citizens. Our virtual visit program matches 2-3 college students with residents of long-term care, assisted living, and memory care communities for virtual video visits. These residents have been suffering from isolation, and you could really brighten their days just by speaking with them. We provide training to the students in the program about the best ways to interact with the seniors, as well as additional support throughout their service. Since these visits are virtual, you can participate without any travel. This is both convenient, and allows more of your time to be spent volunteering, rather than commuting to your volunteering location. We provide this program free of charge to seniors across the country, and have students from around the country as well. We hope that you will volunteer to help our seniors.

Typically, students volunteer 1-2 hours per week. Each call lasts up to one hour, based on the senior's attention span and mood on each day. We expect students to volunteer for approximately 16 weeks, so that they can build a friendship with the senior. This does not need to coincide with the start of a semester, as we have new seniors starting all the time, and train new volunteers weekly. The students are matched based on the times that they're available, with a senior who is available at the same time, and they will have a regular, weekly appointment for their visit. Students wishing for more visits or other opportunities that allow them to volunteer more hours can be accommodated with different ways to volunteer, such as assisting us with our social media, call support, or outreach.

Supporters of the Mobile SPCA donate aluminum cans to us that we recycle for funds to help our mission. We need one or two people at a time to come by to crush cans and then bag them up. We have the can crushing equipment and a spot in the warehouse with a big fan. Please come by to crush cans anytime we are open. Donate whatever time you can.

Social distancing will be adhered to while you are at the closet volunteering and group size is will be limited to reduce density in the space. Gloves are optional.

We need volunteers to help at Penelope's Closet, the thrift store for Penelope House, the local domestic violence shelter for Mobile, Washington, Clarke and Choctaw Counties. Penelope's Closet is located at 2907 Old Shell Road. Volunteering at the closet consists of sorting through donations, hanging donations, putting items on racks, pricing items, assisting customers and various other tasks. The volunteer hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10-4. All proceeds go to support the shelter.

We need 4 or 5 guys to help move our transitional housing clients from time to time. They are not big moves. Sometimes we need a washer and dryer moved to another apartment or a chest of drawers. We also need some one that has a truck to haul the items from one apartment to another. It wouldn't be a far drive. Usually, it's within the same apartment complex. Heavy furniture and pickup weight of over 20 ponds is necessary.

We are looking for volunteers 16 and up who can drive themselves to our shelter to take care of our children while their parent is in group counseling or parenting classes. The volunteer must be able to drive themselves here since it is in a secret location. The volunteer must also fill out a volunteer application and come in to do an orientation that lasts approximately 30 minutes. For any one 18 and older a background clearance is done during orientation.

The Dumas Wesley Community Center's transitional housing program, the Baldwin Family Village (BFV), is located in Fairhope, Alabama. The program provides 12 months of housing stability and wrap-around services for up to 100 women and children annually. BFV seeks to break the cycle of homelessness and help women and children re-establish and maintain self-sufficiency by focusing on accountability, case management, life skills and behavior modification.

Volunteers are needed to become meal sponsors to provide a dinner for single women and women with children experiencing homelessness. Meal sponsors can sign up for one day or multiple days throughout the year.

Meal Sponsor Information
1. Sign up to donate a meal here.
2. Plan to bring a meal that will feed 25-30 people (women and children)
3. Please note your menu items on the meal site in order to avoid duplicate meals during the week
4. We ask that you consider providing a well-rounded meal consisting of a protein, vegetable or fruit, and a starch
5. Please do not bring any food products containing nuts
6. You are welcome to bring disposable plates and utensils
7. Meals must be prepared and fully cooked offsite
8. Volunteers, please deliver your meal by 4:30 p.m. Dinner will be served from 5:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. Please contact Amy Abernathy for inquiries about meal deliveries prior to 4:30 p.m.
9. Baldwin Family Village staff will call to confirm the week before and tell you how many residents we currently have in shelter

o In order to respect the diversity of residents, discussions of faith and religion should be initiated by our residents

The Smile Drive serves as the philanthropy of the Pre-Dental Society of South Alabama. We collect oral hygiene product donations from dental clinics and all collections will be donated to a local community determined by the end of the year. 

Each time a student does the following: Act of contacting the dental clinic + scheduling a date to pick up + driving to pick up donations + driving back to South + delivery to our Smile Drive Coordinator = 2 hours

We are seeking musicians to aid in putting on community music performances around Mobile, AL. We offer several ensembles, including the following:

Our ensembles include opportunities for all classical musicians, including guitar and piano. Pianists will be assigned as needed, and guitarists will only serve in the New Music Ensemble. All performers must have a minimum of two years experience in high school band. 

We do not rehearse weekly. We only rehearse on the weekends of concerts, which typically consist of the following:

Friday: 6pm-9pm

Saturday: 9am-9pm (At least one meal provided)

Sunday: 20 minute dress rehearsal in the morning, woodwind ensembles concert at 6:00pm, brass ensembles concert at 7:45pm.

Rehearsals are at a single site for each concert, which may alternate between the high schools and colleges in Mobile, AL. All rehearsals and performances will be in Mobile, AL unless an ensemble is selected to perform at a national conference.

There is a significant need for help with delivering food to our group homes, senior apartment complexes and individuals who can not come to the Love All Pantry. It requires 2 people to go for safety reasons, and a vehicle to hold the packaged food. Arrive at 8-9 on Tuesday mornings,load and get directions.

TOUR GUIDE FOR THE DORA FRANKLIN FINLEY AFRICAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE TRAIL

We are searching for part-time tour guides (9 - 12 hours/week) for the Dora Franklin Finley African-American Heritage Trail.(DFFAAHT)  The tour guide’s responsibilities include familiarizing customers with local historic sites on the DFFAAHT, and new attractions. These tours are by vehicle (step on tour) and some walking tours. The tour guide will ensure the safety of the groups. The guide should be an excellent storyteller and give excellent customer service. Training and scripts will be provided by DFFAAHT.

Distribution and collection of dresses for sorority recruitment. The drive is open from 8 to 6 in the Student Life (Greek life) office in the student center. This is a resource for PNMs going through formal recruitment in the Fall, to help relieve the financial burden of purchasing outfits. 

The Dumas Wesley Community Center's transitional housing program, the Baldwin Family Village (BFV), is located in Fairhope, Alabama. The program provides 12 months of housing stability and wrap-around services for up to 100 women and children annually. BFV seeks to break the cycle of homelessness and help women and children re-establish and maintain self-sufficiency by focusing on accountability, case management, life skills and behavior modification.

Volunteers are needed to donate new items that will be included in a "Welcome Basket" for new residents upon move in to the Baldwin Family Village. Basket items include: Pillows, Twin Sheet Sets, Full Sheet Sets, Crib Sheets, Twin Comforters, Full Comforters, Full, Twin and Crib Mattress Protectors (waterproof and bed bug proof), Throw Blanket, Bathroom Trash Can, Towel Sets, Clothes Baskets, Packs of Hangers, Laundry Detergent, Dryer Sheets, Adult Body Wash, Kid's Shampoo/Body Wash, Shampoo/Conditioner,,Deodorant, Tampons, Pads, Adult Toothbrush, Kid's Toothbrushes, Adult Toothpaste, Kid's Toothpaste, Diapers (all sizes)

Administrative volunteer needed one - two days a month, approximately 4 hours each day, to assist with daily receptionist duties - answering phones, greeting clients, preparing client files and setting up follow-up appointments. Basic computer skills required. The volunteer would work under the supervision of the Administrative Assistant. Friendly face and voice a must! We have partnered with Goodwill Gulf Coast to share gently used books with students and community members. we ask volunteers to place labels inside of books prior to community events. Volunteers will be expected to peel labels and place labels inside of books. Each opportunity will provide volunteers with 100-400 books to prep. This opportunity is great for a small group 3-5, during business hours Monday-Thursday 8a.m.-4 p.m. This opportunity is available at the Clarke County and Mobile locations.

United Way needs assistance weeding, cutting patch of grass, and picking up trash at parking lot located in downtown Mobile. This opportunity would ideally occur after business hours or on the weekend.

Because of timing of work, volunteer would need to bring tools(weed eater, lawn mower, gloves, rake, garbage bags, hedge trimmers, wheelbarrow, etc)

Provide telephone contact, mailings, and visits to family members following the death of a loved one.  May help with adult support groups and/or Remembrance Ceremonies, and Camp Connect - a bereaved children's camp that is held annually.

The Center for Educational Accessibility and Disability Resources is looking for notetakers to help students in need of accommodations due to a disability. Students who volunteer for the position of notetaker will take notes for each class session they are assigned and will upload these notes on AIM in a typed format. Please visit the uploading file section on AIM for more information.  

In lieu of a stipend, volunteer notetakers are eligible for volunteer service hours. For each hour of a class, volunteers can receive one hour of service to account for the process of note taking and typing/formatting notes.

Each year, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society hosts a cycling fundraiser called Bike MS: Tour de Beach.  This event raises over $500,000 for programs, services, and research benefitting thousands of people in your region living with multiple sclerosis. Free event t-shirt, refreshments, and community service hours available.        

This year's event is scheduled for Friday September 16th,  Saturday September 17th and Sunday September 18th. We are in need of Volunteer Photographers to help capture the spirit, atmosphere and magic of this event. We have opportunities at the Start/Finish line, located at Gulf State Park.

The Storytime for Sprouts program is an ongoing literacy session every 1st Monday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. and is designed to promote literacy with the youth in the local community. This program will hold story time for the children within the community. Parents will receive books to take home for their children at the end of the session as well for the kids to read at home.

Victory has a need for volunteers with a medical background (RN, MD, et. al.)

The Museum is looking for volunteers to dedicate 1 to 2 hours per month pulling up weeds in the Robert Thrower Medicinal Garden. The garden consists of three small beds bordering the front of the house. Hours can be flexible.

By becoming a Rape Crisis Volunteer, you can help by assisting victims of sexual assault within our community. Volunteers are trained to accompany victims at the hospital immediately following the assault, answer crisis calls, assist and participate in community events and fundraising opportunities.

All potential volunteers are asked to attend a screening interview, which includes a background check. It is required and appreciated that each volunteer agrees to no less than one year of committed service. Autism2Ability is searching for a volunteer to assist with software called Foundation Search.  This person has to be extremely well versed in running this program.  Tutorials are done with a person who works at Foundation Search and has solid capability in assisting Autism2Ability.  The support is very good for the person using this database.  The sole purpose of this work is to find those foundations who focus on what we can provide.  Such as Social and Human Services, Health and Education, all of which fit our business model.

Interview is important for both parties to understand the total scope of this vital work.  Times and days will be agreed upon within the framework of the interview and to be sure there is ample time for the completion of responsibility.

The South Baldwin Literacy Council is looking for volunteer tutors! We have opportunities to work with elementary school students, English language learners, and students studying for their GED! We have volunteer sites in Daphne, Foley, and Gulf Shores.  Let us know which location might work best for you.

We urgently need volunteers to help get our Habitat houses built! Volunteers are so important to us because they are the ones who build our houses, under the supervision of our construction crew. We are able to keep building costs down and provide our families affordable housing, through the efforts of our volunteers! We build (Tuesday-Saturday, 8A-3P). We have a few builds coming up that need your help, and we welcome individual volunteers as well as groups. Duties range from painting to flooring and sometimes even putting up walls! Docents needed to give tours of the house.

Volunteers are needed to care for the Friends of the Mobile Animal Shelter's adoptable cats housed at the Petco Store in the new McGowin Park Shopping Center. Volunteer duties are to clean the cat cages, check on their food & water, clean their litter boxes and area surrounding the cages, check on cleanliness of bedding, etc. There are only four (4) cats housed at the store, so the process should only take about 1/2 an hour. Morning shift volunteers can go by the store between the hours of 8:00-10:30am. Evening and weekend help needed. Evening shift volunteers can go by the store between the hours of 5:00-9:00pm.  Thank you in advance for your consideration!

Dependable person needed to take cats and dogs to/from shelter to vet or foster homes, normally during weekday business hours. Crate and blankets/carriers/leashes can be provided.  

Assist with paying bills, reconciling checkbook, making deposits, importing information into a software program and working with Quickbooks. Alpha Center is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Help is needed at least one day a week. United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA) is forming teams of volunteers to help us on an ongoing basis with a number of tasks related to our various programs. Aide for Animals is a small, no-kill, non-profit  501c3 animal welfare organization, adoption center, assisted living and retirement home for healthy (non-contagious) domestic dogs and cats.  We are in need of mature, hard-working, and dependable volunteers to assist in maintaining our large cattery yard and general yard work.  Must have a genuine love and concern for animal welfare & enjoy interacting with dogs, cats, and other volunteers.

Looking for caring, self-directed flexible person, and have the ability to work with all kinds of people and situations.  Likes children and is able to relate to children of all ages.  The Victim Advocate Volunteer must be a responsible individual, who maintains the highest level of confidentiality. 

 Note: Most of the times trials start on a Monday and last more the one day.  We need only serious inquiries who have the time to be available for possibly mulitiple days from 8AM to 5PM. Also you should note that we keep a group of 10 vounteers at all times, therefore we do not need volunteers very often until someone decides they can no longer participate in the Volunteer Advocate Program any more.  If you are seriously interested and there are currently no openings your information will be kept on file until such time an opening becomes available.  There is an interview process to include a background check.

Historic Oakleigh is looking for volunteers interested in an indoor lobby position. We need volunteers to assist the daily lead docent in gift shop sales, answering phones, and welcoming guests. 

Our operating hours are 10am-3pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Tours are on the hour. Last tour is at 2pm.
