Volunteer: Project Homeless Connect 2026 Navigators

We're looking for volunteer navigators for this year's Project Homeless Connect on Friday, January 23, 2026!!

Navigators are advocates for homeless clients who participate in Project Homeless Connect. At Project Homeless Connect several hundred people who are identified as "homeless" will come to receive services such as legal assistance; employment resources; state identification cards; housing assistance; food stamp application; veteran resources; health assessments and education; mental health services; beauty and barber services; voter registration; distribution of hygiene items, clothing, coats, shoes, socks; and much more! Navigators act as "tour guides" and "advocates" through the many service areas.

This role is really important and can be very rewarding as you develop a partnership with your client. Navigators can make (or sadly, break) the event for an individual due to the treatment, care, and efficiency afforded by the relationship that is formed. It is important to treat all clients with dignity and respect.

To volunteer you must complete the following:

"RESPOND" to this need and review and sign the waiver and training packet that will be available electronically after you click the "RESPOND" button. As you read and/or sign each page of the waiver and training packet, be sure to click the blue "SUBMIT PAGE AND PROCEED" button in the bottom left corner to save your edits/progress and proceed to the subsequent page.

The Training Packet will give you an overview of the project and also help you understand things you might encounter during the event so that you'll feel more comfortable in your role. HIPAA training is required prior to the event due to the laws surrounding privacy and healthcare.

After you've electronically signed and submitted the waiver and training packet, click the blue "RESPOND" button for this need a second time to select the shift of your choice and to complete your registration. (NOTE: In Alabama, if you are under 18, a parent must sign the waiver and release forms.)

Bring your Student ID/Driver's License with you to the event, and wear a red shirt of your choice to be distinguished from other volunteers.

Please contact the USA Office of Community Engagement at communityengagement@southalabama.edu or 251-460-6116 if you have any questions or need assistance with the waiver and training packet.
