Hospice Volunteers at VITAS serve in two meaningful capacities, patient care and administrative -- each playing a vital role in supporting our mission of delivering exceptional care to patients and families.

Administrative Hospice Volunteers play a vital behind-the-scenes role at VITAS, offering clerical & organizational support that helps our teams deliver exceptional care to patients & families.Patient Care Hospice Volunteers bring comfort, companionship, & emotional support to patients & families during end-of-life care. They offer light assistance, respite, & a caring presence— sometimes extending that support through gentle bereavement care for loved ones. Volunteers serve in homes, nursing facilities, or Inpatient Hospice Centers, complementing the clinical team with heartfelt, non-medical care tailored to each patient’s needs.

Homemaker Volunteers provide practical relief to patients and families during a time when daily chores can feel overwhelming. By taking over simple household tasks, they help maintain a peaceful, clean, and dignified environment, allowing families to focus on spending quality time together rather than on the stress of upkeep. This role is a perfect fit for those who want to provide tangible, "boots-on-the-ground" support that immediately improves the daily lives of those in hospice care.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES, MAY INCLUDE:

Helping with clerical tasks, data entry, filing, friendly phone calls, newsletter prep, & keeping our supply room organized.Dropping off supplies, groceries, or medications to patients & caregivers.Taking part in Veteran pinning, community fairs, & VITAS booths to share our mission & connect with others.Making proactive & bereavement check-in calls, listen with care, & share any concerns with the team.Supporting with other meaningful tasks as they arise.Logging/documenting your volunteer activities/hours promptly.Greeting visitors with warmth, offer tours, play soothing music, help with light tidying, & alert staff to call lights.Participating in team meeting, trainings, & in-services as required.Performing other duties as assigned.

HOMEMAKER VOLUNTEER RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performing light cleaning tasks such as dusting, vacuuming, washing dishes, and making beds.Helping families keep up with household needs by processing loads of laundry.Supporting the household with basic meal preparation and grocery shopping errands.Creating a more comfortable and organized space for the patient to rest.Offering your time based on your own availability, as dates and times for these assignments are ongoing and flexible.Completing the free VITAS orientation to learn how to sensitively navigate the hospice environment (Open to volunteers 16 and older; background check required).

ROLE REQUIREMENTS:

What’s a Shelter Helper?
Stop by anytime you have 2 hours to spare, just say you're here to be a shelter helper! Shelter Helpers are the backbone of our daily operations. By tackling tasks like laundry, dishes, and general tidying, you free up staff to focus on animal care — and you make the shelter a cleaner, more comfortable place for our furry friends.

What You’ll Do:

Are you good at helping people put their life on a tax form? You will get all the training you need to save local families LOTS of money by helping them get their taxes done for free. Or volunteer to help with desk duty, welcoming and directing clients to meet with tax preparers.

Goodwill Gulf Coast will be staffing two locations to prepare taxes for free for local residents. The Ladd Learning Center is located at 2440 Gordon Smith Drive in Mobile 36617, and the Azalea Community Center is 300-F Azalea Road, Mobile 36609. Schedules will be posted in January. Spend this fall learning all you need to know with VITA training, so you will be ready for the tax season in late January. Next class starts soon!

Regular visits from Hospice Companions can minimize patient loneliness and isolation through fellowship. The Road To Recovery Volunteer Driver provides people with transportation to and from their cancer-related medical appointments. Drivers donate their time to help people with cancer get the lifesaving treatments they need.

Volunteers choose the rides that work best for their schedule. Most rides are scheduled during the weekday between 7am and 7pm. The American Cancer Society asks volunteers to commit to a minimum of 2 rides per month.

We offer ample training resources, session materials, and total flexibility to customize your sessions to fit your/your partner’s goals and preferences. Our friendly team is available to support you throughout your time with us.

Our only requirements for volunteers are English fluency, a strong internet connection, and the ability to commit to one hour a week for a minimum of 10-12 weeks.

Please contact VGP Coordinator Lynn Hudson at email address lhudson@viamobile.org Each year, many citizens in Mobile County are declared by the Probate Court to be unable to make decisions on their own. These special citizens - or wards - are rescued by an incredible community group known as Volunteer Guardians.

A Guardianship is a legal relationship in which a Guardian is appointed by Mobile County Probate Court to make decisions for those incapacitated or unable to communicate decisions concerning their health or safety. The guardian does not handle any financial responsibilities. A Conservator is appointed by the court to handle these matters.

The Volunteer Guardian Program (VGP) is the last line of defense for vulnerable citizens - with no appropriate family or friends - against homelessness and worsening quality of life. The VGP is administered by the Via Health, Fitness and Enrichment Center, and partners with the Mobile County Probate Court, the Mobile County Commission, the City of Mobile and community referral agencies. Mobile County’s VGP was introduced by Probate Court Judge Don Davis in 2010, and the program remains the first and only of its kind in our state.

The life-changing decisions Volunteer Guardians make for their wards impact basic needs (food and housing), medical treatments or care and end-of-life care. Guardians attend court hearings, file paperwork, coordinate with other agencies to obtain needed services, shop or take their ward shopping, attend doctors’ appointments if needed and stay connected to ensure wards’ health and safety.

Since 2010, VGP has recruited, trained and matched hundreds of community volunteers to serve as Guardians for these special people. Currently, there are more than 65 amazing Volunteer Guardians active in the program. They range in age from 21 to 65, and include college students, homemakers, nurses, pastors and preachers, Certified Nursing Assistants, social workers and even a retired FBI official.

The Via Center is seeking caring and committed volunteers to become a part of the program.

What does it take to be a Volunteer Guardian?

Volunteer Guardians are compassionate, caring and committed. They are 21 and older, have computer access, transportation, the ability to learn basic legal and medical information, can complete a background check and are able to spare at least 4-6 hours per month to make a vulnerable citizen's life better. And, during the pandemic, all Covid safety and health protocols are in place for the program.
