Be an Advocate for the Animals – Even Without Volunteering at the Shelter!

Even if you don’t have much time to spend at the shelter, you can still make a big difference in the lives of the animals here. Every small action adds up, and there are many ways to support our mission from wherever you are:

Help Spread the Word: Stop by the shelter to pick up flyers and materials to distribute in your neighborhood, workplace, or at local businesses. Just a few minutes of your time can help us reach new potential volunteers and fosters.

Share on Social Media: Follow us online and share our posts about adoptable animals, events, and volunteer opportunities. A simple share can connect a pet with their forever home!

Attend and Promote Events: Join us at community events or help promote them by inviting friends, sharing event info, or posting flyers in local hot spots

Be a Voice in the Community: Talk to friends, coworkers, or local groups about our Volunteer and Foster programs. Word of mouth is powerful!

No Orientation required, counts for volunteer hours! Please contact me at to set up advocate assignments.

Volunteer: *Start here to work with animals* Orientation

If you want to work directly with the dogs or cats start here :)

This is a recorded orientation you can complete from home. After watching the video, please answer the three questions below and email your responses to me at Breanna.Callahan@mobilecountyal.gov

How many Animal Control Officers do we have?

What device do we sometimes use to move feral or scared cats?

What is the name of the brown dog (far right) on the “No Photo Zone” slides?

Once I receive your answers, I’ll send you the link to view and then you can sign up for available volunteer shifts that interact directly with animals.

For your first day at the shelter, bring a valid photo ID. You’ll receive your Volunteer Handbook, sign a waiver, and complete a quick 40-minute training at the start of your shift.

Thanks so much for supporting the animals—we’re excited to have you on board!

Volunteer: Shelter Helper

Help Behind the Scenes – Volunteer Shelter Helper Needed!
Not every hero wears a cape — some carry laundry baskets and dish soap!
At Mobile County Animal Shelter, keeping things clean and organized is essential for the health and comfort of our animals. We’re looking for dependable volunteers to help keep our shelter running smoothly.

Step1-watch this orientation video: https://volunteer.uwswa.org/need/detail/?need_id=1116261 *new link

If you are under 19 -Step2: email me for minor waiver at
Breanna.Callahan@mobilecountyal.gov

What’s a Shelter Helper?
Stop by anytime you have 2 hours to spare, just say you're here to be a shelter helper! Shelter Helpers are the backbone of our daily operations. By tackling tasks like laundry, dishes, and general tidying, you free up staff to focus on animal care — and you make the shelter a cleaner, more comfortable place for our furry friends.

What You’ll Do:

Wash and dry animal bedding, fold and organizing towels, and blankets

Wash and sanitize food/water bowls and toys

Sweep, mop, and tidy common areas as needed

Restock supplies and keep workspaces organized

Pitch in wherever a helping hand is needed

Qualifications:

Comfortable working around dogs and cats but not necessarily with them (if you don't want to)

Willing to get a little messy (laundry and dishes can be a splash zone!)

Able to lift light to moderate loads of laundry and supplies

Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently or with a team

Flexible with tasks — needs can change daily

Why It Matters:
Clean bedding, fresh bowls, and tidy spaces help our animals stay healthy, happy, and ready to meet their forever families. Every load of laundry or washed dish is a step toward adoption day!

Join Us Today!

Volunteer: Help Spark a Love of Reading - One Child at a Time!

Do you enjoy quiet, focused tasks that make a big impact behind the scenes? We're looking for a detail-oriented volunteer to help us enter registrations for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, a program that delivers free books to children from birth to age five, right here in our community.

What You’ll Do: Twice a month, you'll spend a few hours entering new child registrations into our online system. It may not be glamorous, but your work ensures local children receive a brand-new, age-appropriate book in the mail each month—often the very first books they’ll ever own.

Why It Matters: Early exposure to books is one of the strongest predictors of a child’s future academic success. By volunteering your time, you’ll help foster a lifelong love of reading and learning for hundreds of children across Southwest Alabama.

Time Commitment and Skills Needed: Approximately 2 times per month, with flexible scheduling during business hours. You'll need basic computer skills, attention to detail, and a passion for giving kids a strong start in life.

Volunteer: Volunteer Guardians Needed

Not Everyone Has Someone.. Become a Volunteer Guardian Today

We have a waiting list of people that need a guardian. Now is the time to sign up to volunteer if you have been waiting.

Click Here for Via Center Webpage

Please contact VGP Coordinator Lynn Hudson at email address lhudson@viamobile.org Each year, many citizens in Mobile County are declared by the Probate Court to be unable to make decisions on their own.  These special citizens - or wards - are rescued by an incredible community group known as Volunteer Guardians.

A Guardianship is a legal relationship in which a Guardian is appointed by Mobile County Probate Court to make decisions for those incapacitated or unable to communicate decisions concerning their health or safety. The guardian does not handle any financial responsibilities. A Conservator is appointed by the court to handle these matters.

The Volunteer Guardian Program (VGP) is the last line of defense for vulnerable citizens - with no appropriate family or friends - against homelessness and worsening quality of life.  The VGP is administered by the Via Health, Fitness and Enrichment Center, and partners with the Mobile County Probate Court, the Mobile County Commission, the City of Mobile and community referral agencies.  Mobile County’s VGP was introduced by Probate Court Judge Don Davis in 2010, and the program remains the first and only of its kind in our state.

The life-changing decisions Volunteer Guardians make for their wards impact basic needs (food and housing), medical treatments or care and end-of-life care.  Guardians attend court hearings, file paperwork, coordinate with other agencies to obtain needed services, shop or take  their ward shopping,  attend doctors’ appointments if needed and stay connected to ensure wards’ health and safety.

Since 2010, VGP has recruited, trained and matched hundreds of community volunteers to serve as Guardians for these special people. Currently, there are more than 65 amazing Volunteer Guardians active in the program.  They range in age from 21 to 65, and include college students, homemakers, nurses, pastors and preachers, Certified Nursing Assistants, social workers and even a retired FBI official.

The Via Center is seeking caring and committed volunteers to become a part of the program.

What does it take to be a Volunteer Guardian?

Volunteer Guardians are compassionate, caring and committed.  They are 21 and older, have computer access, transportation, the ability to learn basic legal and medical information, can complete a background check and are able to spare at least 4-6 hours per month to make a vulnerable citizen's life better.  And, during the pandemic, all Covid safety and health protocols are in place for the program.
