Needs From: South Serves

What is better than getting out of jail free?  Getting out of jail with a GED!!!  Our tutoring program inside the Metro Jail is helping people go to work at good jobs when they get out, and keep from coming back. Your tutoring and admin skills can help WOMEN get into the program, study the right things, and pass the test!  We especially need a woman (or two!) who can help keep testing and paperwork up to date as well as teach reading and writing skills.

You can help adults with disabilities have creative FUN every weekday!  

Goodwill Gulf Coast has an Adult Day Program at 2440 Gordon Smith Drive, Mobile, AL 36617 (Ladd Learning Center), and participants love doing activities there that they enjoy!  You can help the fun keep rolling!  

NOTE:  Parents MUST accompany children under 16; this is a weekday opportunity (M-F, 9 am to 3 pm).  You can volunteer for just a couple of hours at a time if you like.

Help us keep tons of materials out of the landfill!  The Mobile County Recycling Center at 7450 Hitt Road needs your help. Help us sort materials inside the building to ready them for baling.  Must be 18 or older to work inside (volunteer outside if you are under 18!). Two hours can make a BIG difference for our rivers, streams and a healthy environment--your youth will see the environmental impact, too!  Contact Lgaudet@goodwillgc.org to schedule a time to come help.  

Got a group (Scout troop, class, youth group)?  Schedule a tour--learning about the environment can be a first step to taking good care of it.

It's a lot of work keeping 3 MILLION pounds of stuff out of our environment! Help us go GREEN by doing some recycling or campus cleanup! Great for families and youth, really ANYONE can help sort, spruce up, clean up, trim up, and more! Must be at least 11 years old, and youth under 16 should come with a chaperone. Math with numbers AND letters?  Together???!! Not everyone can wrap their heads around it.  Our GED students need to master Algebra and Geometry basics if they hope to pass the test (and they DO HOPE to pass it!) You can help them pull it together as a Math Tutor with Goodwill Gulf Coast!

Each year, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society hosts a cycling fundraiser called Bike MS: Tour de Beach.  This event raises over $500,000 for programs, services, and research benefitting thousands of people in your region living with multiple sclerosis. Free event t-shirt, refreshments, and community service hours available.        

This year's event is scheduled for Friday September 16th,  Saturday September 17th and Sunday September 18th. We are in need of Volunteer Photographers to help capture the spirit, atmosphere and magic of this event. We have opportunities at the Start/Finish line, located at Gulf State Park.

The Museum is looking for volunteers to dedicate 1 to 2 hours per month pulling up weeds in the Robert Thrower Medicinal Garden. The garden consists of three small beds bordering the front of the house. Hours can be flexible.

By becoming a Rape Crisis Volunteer, you can help by assisting victims of sexual assault within our community. Volunteers are trained to accompany victims at the hospital immediately following the assault, answer crisis calls, assist and participate in community events and fundraising opportunities.

All potential volunteers are asked to attend a screening interview, which includes a background check. It is required and appreciated that each volunteer agrees to no less than one year of committed service. With your support, we can and will continue to provide these critical services on a 24/7 basis.

We urgently need volunteers to help get our Habitat houses built! Volunteers are so important to us because they are the ones who build our houses, under the supervision of our construction crew. We are able to keep building costs down and provide our families affordable housing, through the efforts of our volunteers! We build (Tuesday-Saturday, 8A-3P). We have a few builds coming up that need your help, and we welcome individual volunteers as well as groups. Duties range from painting to flooring and sometimes even putting up walls! No previous skills are needed. Come help build a Habitat Home today!

The Office of Community Engagement promotes partnerships between the University of South Alabama community and the Mobile community, and we use South Serves to help make these connections.  We encourage you to look at the Needs and Events on South Serves to see what type of volunteer opportunities, partnerships, and experiences are available in the area.  Check out the types of Needs that connect to your different interests, and the large list of Agencies.  Some needs originate on our South Serves site, while others come to us from United Way's Volunteer Connect agencies.

Now you can select TRACK HOURS using the top right-side navigation (Using PC - see dropdown to the right of your initials; or using ipad/phone - the little white box with black slides).  You'll click "+ADD HOURS", and at Select A Need dropdown, you'll see this Need.  Complete the form to add .5 hour of service (one half hour/30 minutes is listed as .5).

Next, review your Volunteer Resume by using left-side navigation and selecting the Dashboard/Home.  You will see a link that says: View your full Volunteer Resume under the Hours By Interest graph.
