Description

In Alabama, Medicaid covers 58% of all births and 36% of all children under three, yet no government safety-net programs provide diapers to families or consider them as a basic need.

An adequate supply of diapers (approximately 200 diapers each month) can cost in excess of $80 each month. Those dollars can often be as much of 37% of a family's monthly income. The result is that one in three families in Southwest Alabama struggle to afford diapers for their children. Most working parents rely on child care. Most child care facilities require parents to provide diapers for their children. Without child care, parent can not work or attend school. (Source: National Diaper Bank Network)

The UWSWA Women's Initiative presents their 3rd Annual Diaper/Wipe Drive. They are collecting baby and adult diapers in all sizes along with wipes to help partner agencies provide these basics to their clients. The benefiting agencies include: The Salvation Army of Coastal AlabamaGoodwill Easter Seals, Headstart, Dumas Wesley Community CenterPenelope House, and Mulherin Home.

Donations may be taken to UWSWA (218 St. Francis Street, 36602) or Russell Thompson Butler & Houston, LLP (3605 Springhill Avenue, 36608) during regular business hours between October 1 and October 31, 2018.
